What is viewio?
viewio is a free, open-source macOS screen recorder. You capture your screen at up to 4K60, then restyle cursor, zoom ranges, backgrounds, padding, and audio in a built-in timeline editor — without re-recording. Beautiful screen recordings, minus the editing.
Is viewio free? Is there a watermark?
Yes — MIT-licensed, free forever via direct .dmg or Mac App Store. No watermark, no account, no subscription. Your recordings stay on your Mac unless you export them.
Which Macs does viewio support?
macOS 13+ on Apple Silicon (arm64). Native app, not Electron. Intel Macs and Windows/Linux are not supported.
Can I change cursor and zoom after recording?
Yes. Add zoom ranges on the timeline that follow your cursor with smooth entry/exit, and restyle the cursor after capture with real macOS cursor assets.
How is viewio different from OBS or Loom?
OBS is powerful but manual for demo polish; viewio is purpose-built for demos with one-click export. Loom requires cloud upload; viewio is local-first. Unlike CleanShot X ($29) or ScreenFlow ($169), viewio is free and lets you restyle the cursor post-capture.
Where do recordings stay? Is it private?
On your Mac by default. viewio does not upload recordings, mic, camera or project files. Website analytics uses privacy-focused Umami (no tracking in the app). See Privacy Policy.
How do I install viewio?
Mac App Store or download viewio-macos-arm64.dmg from GitHub Releases. Open, grant Screen Recording/Mic/Camera permissions in System Settings, and start recording.
Can I export with transparent background?
No — viewio composites onto a wallpaper/padding with corner radius. For alpha channel, use OBS + post in Final Cut.
Does viewio support system audio capture?
Yes — system audio, microphone, background music, and mute original. Mix narration and soundtrack after fact.
