Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how viewio (“viewio,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information in connection with the viewio macOS application and the viewio website (together, the “Services”). viewio is an open-source screen recording tool. We designed it so your recordings stay on your device by default.
1. Summary
- Screen recordings, microphone audio, camera video, and project files stay on your Mac unless you export or share them yourself.
- We do not require an account to use the app.
- This website uses privacy-focused analytics (Umami) and may also use basic technical logs typical of hosting providers.
- Third-party sites you visit from viewio (GitHub, Discord, Telegram, X, and similar) have their own privacy policies.
2. Information the app processes
When you use the viewio desktop app, processing happens on your device. Depending on the features you use, the app may access:
- Screen content - display, window, or region capture you start.
- Microphone and system audio - if you enable those sources.
- Camera video - if you enable a camera overlay.
- Cursor and interaction data - used for zoom and cursor styling in the editor.
- Local project files and preferences - saved on your Mac so you can edit and export later.
viewio does not upload your recordings, camera feed, microphone audio, or project files to our servers as part of normal recording or editing. Export destinations (for example saving a file, or uploading to a service you choose) are under your control.
3. Permissions on macOS
macOS may prompt you for Screen Recording, Microphone, Camera, and related permissions. Those permissions are enforced by the operating system. You can revoke them at any time in System Settings. Without certain permissions, some features will not work.
4. Information from the website
When you visit the viewio website, standard server and hosting logs may collect technical data such as IP address, browser type, referring URL, pages requested, and timestamps. We use this only to operate, secure, and improve the site (for example, diagnosing outages or abuse).
We also use Umami, a privacy-focused web analytics tool, to understand aggregate site usage (for example, page views and referrers). Umami is configured to help us improve the website. It is not used to build advertising profiles or sell your data. Analytics requests are sent to infrastructure we operate (or that we control for this purpose), separate from the desktop app. The viewio macOS app does not include this website analytics.
If we change analytics providers, cookies, or similar technologies in a material way, we will update this policy and, where required, provide appropriate notice or controls.
5. Downloads, updates, and open source
App downloads and source code may be hosted on third-party platforms such as GitHub. Accessing those platforms is subject to their privacy practices. We do not control how GitHub or other hosts process data when you download releases or browse the repository.
6. Community and social links
Links to Discord, Telegram, X, GitHub, and similar services take you to third-party products. Any information you share there is governed by those services’ policies, not this one.
7. How we use information
Where we process website or operational data, we use it to:
- Provide and maintain the website and related infrastructure;
- Measure aggregate traffic and improve the website (via Umami analytics);
- Respond to support or community inquiries you send us;
- Protect against fraud, abuse, and security incidents;
- Comply with law and enforce our Terms of Service.
8. Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We may share limited operational data with service providers who host the website or help us run infrastructure, solely to provide those services, or when required by law, legal process, or to protect rights and safety.
9. Data retention
Local app data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. Website logs are retained only as long as reasonably needed for security, operations, and legal compliance, then deleted or anonymized.
10. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the website and related systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. You are responsible for keeping your Mac, accounts, and exported files secure.
11. Children
The Services are not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
12. International users
If you access the Services from outside the country where our hosting or operators are located, your information may be processed in other countries that may have different data protection laws.
13. Your choices
- Deny or revoke macOS permissions for screen, mic, or camera.
- Delete local recordings and projects from your device.
- Stop using the app or website at any time.
- Block or limit analytics scripts with browser settings or extensions (this may affect other site features depending on your tools).
- Contact us about website-related data requests where applicable law provides rights of access, correction, deletion, or objection.
14. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the Services after an update means you accept the revised policy, to the extent permitted by law.
